Reverse Osmosis (R/O) Systems

Under the Sink Reverse Osmosis Systems

The under-the-sink reverse osmosis (R/O) system is one of the most practical solutions for providing clean drinking water in your home. These systems feature multiple filtration stages and are recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as “the best available technology for meeting a wide variety of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) regulations.” Under the sink, R/O systems effectively remove contaminants, providing safe and clean water for drinking and cooking.

Whole House Reverse Osmosis Systems

Whole-house reverse osmosis systems operate on the same principles as under-the-sink R/O systems but on a much larger scale. These systems are particularly recommended if your well water is affected by salt intrusion. Whole house R/O systems desalinate water, making it suitable for all household uses, including drinking, showering, and cooking.

However, maintaining the chlorine level in the holding tank is crucial. Without proper chlorination, bacteria can grow, especially in warmer regions, rendering the water undrinkable. These systems also require significant additional equipment and maintenance, including:

  • Holding Tank: Stores the filtered water
  • Water Softener: Reduces hardness in the water
  • Chemical Pump: Adds necessary chemicals back into the water
  • Carbon Filter: Removes chlorine and improves taste
  • Calcite Filter: Adds essential minerals back into the water

Due to their complexity and cost, ranging from $7,000 to $15,000, whole-house R/O systems are typically recommended only for addressing specific issues like salt intrusion.
